Calling all hot rver, this episode of RV Small Talk is for you! Every Summer is HOT, but certain locations are unbearable annually. For many, Parts of the South, like the Gulf Coast, West Texas, Arizona, etc. are un-campable during the summer months due to oppressive and dangerous heat. While much of the rest of the nation is using their summer vacations to get outdoors, campers in these places are hiding in the shade and air conditioning. We’re no strangers to camping in the heat, and we’ve learned tricks that allow us to stay cool while camping in the Summer.
Set Your Expectations For Hot Weather Camping
Communities worldwide who live in hot climates have developed schedules that include mid-day siestas. Do your camping activities with their wisdom. Schedule your most active events for early morning, late afternoon, and early evening. Rest in the shade in the middle and hottest part of the day. This will become the perfect part of the day to make lunch with the family, kick back and relax with a good book or a classic movie. Just because you’re stuck in your camper, doesn’t mean it can’t be fun!
Pro Tip: Accept that dealing with the heat is part of the camping experience. Embracing this mindset will help you stay positive and maximize your trip.
Prepare For Camping in the Summer
Once you’ve prepared yourself to camp in the heat, you are guaranteed to have a memorable and fun camping experience. Knowing there will be a few hours of hanging inside your RV, make sure you’ve packed appropriately (games, crafts, lunch goodies that don’t require heat, etc). Make sure to pack lots of water and electrolytes. The last thing you want on a camping trip is dehydration, trust us! On the other hand, limit your consumption of alcohol or sugary drinks as this can cause faster dehydration. If you can pick your camping spot, try to get as close as possible to easy access to shade. Or know where the shady spots are around the campgrounds. This allows you to enjoy nature for longer periods as a hot rver.
A Quick Recap:
- Water (for drinking and cooling off)
- Electrolytes (hydration is critical!)
- Shade (nature’s best air conditioner)
- Breeze (take advantage of airflow when you can)
- Easy meals and snacks (minimize cooking heat)
- Healthy snacks to keep your energy up
- Limit alcohol and diuretics to stay hydrated
- Environmentally-appropriate activities
Is your RV up to the task of RVing in the Heat?
If you’re shopping for an RV or already own one, proper insulation is essential for keeping cool in hot climates. A well-insulated RV helps keep the heat out, and air conditioning efficient. Check for adequate ventilation—opening windows and vents can improve airflow inside your rig. Also, inspect your RV’s seals and ensure there are no cracks or gaps that could let in hot air.
Hot RVer Weather Checklist:
- Is there enough insulation?
- Windows? What can you do here?
- Enough Air Conditioning
- Airflow if using the breeze
- Vents (for use or closed and insulated)
- Water holding capacity
- Sealed adequately
- Don’t Let the Heat Stop You From Camping!
Even during the hottest summer months, camping is possible—you need to be prepared and plan wisely. Remember, latitude, altitude, and attitude are key! Higher elevations and northern latitudes tend to offer cooler temperatures. With the right mindset and preparation, you can continue enjoying the outdoors, even in the heat.
