Birding: An Activity For The Whole Family!

Before planning your next camping trip, consider adding Bird Watching to your list of family activities when exploring the outdoors! It’s a great way to get outside while also appreciating all that nature has to offer. This calming activity allows you to be in the moment and take more notice of the environment around you – including plants, insects, and of course, birds. Clint and Lindsay sit down with Mary G, who has been an avid bird watcher for many years, and take a deep dive into everything that goes into birding.

Mary G’s Introduction To Bird Watching

As a geology major, Mary was introduced to the world of camping, taking many school-organized field trips. During that time, she discovered her love for camping and exploring nature.

Years later when getting her master’s, Mary G and her roommate began bird watching and after her first Coo-Coo Bird sighting, she was hooked. She started exploring hiking trails and state parks, taking guided tours to learn as much as she could about birding.

When Mary G and her husband Mark moved to Texas, they wanted to travel around the Lone Star State as much as they could. They visited several state parks as well as surrounding areas to see what they could find.  To this day, you will find them traveling to “The Valley” (The southern tip of Texas), Galveston, and High Island – which is the place to be in the birding community during spring migration.

Find Your Birding Community Using Apps

While tours can range in price, self-guided tours are free. There are even apps that help you find, identify, and track the birds on whatever excursion you’re on.

Want to see interesting birds without leaving the house? Try putting out a shallow pan of water, setting up a feeder, and finding plants in your area that attract birds.

No matter where your travels take you, go out and get exploring!
