Weather You Need to Know!
Whether or not you’re into weather, when you’re on the road, it can make the difference between a beautiful rainy day with a poncho, or a disastrous rainy day without one! If you’re a free spirit and clothing just happens, then worry less about the daily – What do I wear today?! – questions and are probably more focused on the road. If not, please focus on the road. We’ll wait…
From the polar vortex aka ‘snovid’ or ‘snowpocalypse’ or ‘snowmageddon’, as we experienced first hand in Central Texas and across the Southern United States, all the way to wall and shelf clouds, we learned quite a bit from our guest, Avery Tomasco, a new friend of the podcast!
Meteorologist Avery Tomasco with CBS Austin
Avery Tomasco is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist for CBS Austin News, who you can find covering the weekend evening 6 p.m & 10 p.m. on Saturdays weather news, and 5:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Sundays, as well! Houston born and Austin raised, who like our very own Clint, has had a nerdy love for the weather of Central and East Texas since watching the skies as a young man, and wondering about the pressure that it takes to puff rice… right?
Avery shares his experiences in the weather world, from an educator’s perspective and loves nothing more than when his social media followers post an image of a weather phenomena that they recognize because they’ve been watching him on CBS Austin. As well as the heartfelt concerns for all the viewers and members of the communities covered with the weather team’s forecasts affecting everything from family get togethers, to sports and even livelihoods with ranchers and farmers depending on well, dependable forecasts, and especially after the recent weather, we’re definitely in this together, Texas!
RV Weather Tips and Things to Know
When it comes to hitting the open road and not a storm front, there are a few interesting bits of information that Avery pointed out to us that we wanted to share. Wind, lighting, rain – oh my! Don’t worry, if it gets too bad just call on Captain Planet and the Planeteers!
- If in an RV and lightning is happening around, be sure to stay INSIDE your RV. Lightning will find a way to ground itself, and you don’t want it to be you!
- ‘Bolts from the Blue’ – lightning happening up to 50 miles away from a storm system!
- If there are tornado warnings, be sure to leave your RV and head to a solid structure or a ditch to cover your head and get as low as possible.
Avery Tomasco Approved Apps for Weather Watching
- CBS Austin Storm Tracker – #1 Avery Tomasco Recommended Weather App of All Time. Check it out first, per Avery’s contract please!
- RadarScope – Vector scope and cross sections? Yeah, Clint and Avery
- My Lightning Tracker App – You can’t ride the lightning… we tried, but you can see all of it!
