From a corporate career in biotech to embracing the rugged world of overlanding, we met with Tyler from TX K-9 Overland to learn all about his journey to off grid adventures. Starting as an avenue to document his travels, Tyler’s digital world evolved into a thriving online platform. With over 13,000 Instagram followers, he is able to connect with other outdoor enthusiasts building an overland community.
Tyler’s Natural Connection To Overlanding
As a natural adventure seeker, Tyler started with dual sport riding through the beautiful scenery of West Virginia before venturing into the world of off grid camping. After researching, connecting with overland groups, and attending expos, he found Boreas Campers. Built for the wilderness, Tyler knew the Boreas XT camper had everything he needed, allowing him to stay off the grid for long periods of time while also protecting him from the elements.
Meet Duke and Lacy
And we couldn’t forget about Duke and Lacy, his adventure loving pups that tag along the exciting journeys. These American Yellow Labs thrive when camping, being able to roam with no boundaries. From hiking the trails in Montana to admiring the mountains in Idaho, Duke and Lacy are Tyler’s fearless sidekicks no matter where the voyage takes them.
While the journey’s been loaded with highlights, there’ve been lessons learned—moments that nearly cost Tyler his camper, serving as reminders of the unpredictable nature of overlanding. As Tyler shares in the podcast, “It’s a whole different life experience…I think what you learn about yourself is…you can do it”. This is what pushes Tyler to go further and explore more, even when the destination is unknown.
At the beginning of his journey, he found different ways to get connected. First, was his opportunity to meet with a Boreas Ambassador that lived close to him. From there, he was able to connect with other off grid campers, growing his knowledge and setting him up for success while in nature. He has built a great community of overlanders who can share their experiences and grow together.
Tylers Advice?
Ask questions and research! Going to overland expos and well as finding overland campers across social platforms allows you to engage with people like never before.
Additionally, show up! Show up to the rallies, expos, and other events around your area. There’s no better way to get connected than to be at events in person. With his trips ranging around 2500 to 3000 miles and staying off grid anywhere from 2-4 weeks, he knows the importance of continued education, ensuring his adventures are as memorable as possible. Some key advice he gives to new camper is to know the basics of building a fire as well as first aid basics.
What does the future hold?
Tyler is planning trips to Idaho moving into Montana, up to Glacier Peak, and ending in Oregon.
